Match Report
27 January 2019 / Team News

Back on the road with a win.

After two defeats we traveled the short distance to our near neigbours Pontrhydyfen and in terrible conditions we blew away our host with some fantastic handling of the wet ball. We kicked off with a strong 20 point wind behind our backs and after some play with both teams trying to get the upper hand we took the lead with a penalty bu out-side half Nathan Healy.  We continued to attack and should have scored a early try but Ponty kept us at bay. With this wind and heavy showers we were guilty of not put the ball in our opponents red zone.

But from a series of attacks we scored our 1st try when some good handling left open wing Alun Tamling to score in the corner. We soon increased our lead when centre Lee Bevan back in the team after his work commitments and its a pity he could not be available every week. On one of his trade mark runs he burst through for a good try which Healy converted for a 13 point lead. Were then threw two try's away when we were guilty of going to far with the ball and poor final passes did not find the supporting runner.

We kicked off the second half with the wind and rain in our faces would 13 points be enough it did not look like when from their first attack of the half within a minute of the restart Ponty pulled back 5 points from a scrum when they got moving backwards for the first time, but they missed the conversion. This would prove to be the only time that they troubled our defence.

We soon got back on the front foot when we began to keep it tight to make our way up field and then release our backs and from one such move we found full back Rhodri Thomas who broke through to score our first try of the half which Healy converted.

Trying has hard as they could Ponty could not get any joy with their attacking game. After we won a tackle in mid field the ball was dropped and wing Josh Thomas hacked through to re-gather the ball and score out wide but Healy missed the conversion into the strong wind.

We went into the last quarter well on top and with our coach Gavin Thomas making his changes at the right time through the half we scored our final try when Centre Steffan Hnatiuk broke two tackles to race away to score for Healy to convert.

Both teams and the referee must be congratulated for combining to make a good game in these terrible conditions

Next weekend we entertain Rhigos RFC at Ynyscorrwg Park for a 2-30pm Kick off. All support welcome. Don't forget that WALES play France at 8pm on  Friday Night why don't you come down to watch it in the club and enjoy a couple of beers and support WALES to a win.
